Lambeth Mission & St Mary's is located in a famous corner of Lambeth - just at the junction of Lambeth Road with the Lambeth Walk. We are a united congregation of Anglicans, Methodist (and others) with a proud history. The original St Mary’s Church was founded in the 11th century. The building still stands on the bank of the Thames, just near the entrance to Lambeth Palace. In the 1970s, it became too expensive for the congregation to maintain, and they came along the road to join the Methodists at Lambeth Mission. These days, the old building is the Museum of Garden History. The Methodists have served this area for around 200 years, in exciting and innovative ways. In the 1920s and 30s, the church became known as “the Ideal” – a cinema which used film both to entertain and to share the gospel. The old building was destroyed in the war, and the current buildings date back to the 1950s and 60s. Today, we form a mixed congregation of different backgrounds and from different religious traditions. We are black and white, rich and poor. We work hard to be inclusive and to make everyone welcome. Our main Sunday worship is at 10am, and we have Sunday School for children at the same time. We are anxious to serve the present age, both locally - where we work alongside other community groups to provide a variety of services to the community - and in the wider world, where we are engaged in campaigning on Trade Justice, green concerns, and similar issues. |
